Northern College is a small college designed for adults, with residential accommodation for students aged 19 years and over.
Most of the courses they offer are short, intensive, residential courses of two to five days, running during the week and at weekends. They also offer a one year Access to HE course and have some non-residential provision. They work closely with a range of community groups and offer specially designed courses for their members; other courses are open to all. The Northern College teacher education programme specialises in social purpose education and draws many students from community partners.

Northern college also partner with charities, community groups, housing associations and support services, offering courses delivered directly in the community. They run a course called; Five Ways to Wellbeing: A Gentle Introduction to Learning. This relaxed, short course gives groups a friendly first experience of Northern College, built around the Five Ways to Wellbeing – Keep Learning, Connect, Give, Take Notice and Keep Active.
