British Sign Language Talking Therapies Service is for Deaf BSL users (18+) registered with GP practices across South Yorkshire. It is a free service provided by the NHS through SignHealth.

SignHealth provides specialist NHS Talking Therapies delivered directly in British Sign Language by qualified clinicians who are fluent BSL users and experienced in working with Deaf people.

What Can BSL Talking Therapies Help With?

The service supports people experiencing common mental health difficulties that are appropriate for NHS Talking Therapies, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Phobias
  • Bereavement
  • Low self-esteem and confidence difficulties
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Family-related or work-related stress
  • Sleep difficulties

What Kind of Therapy Can They Offer?

The kind of therapy you are offered will vary depending on what you need and availability within the service. Therapies SignHealth may provide include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Counselling for Depression
  • Interpersonal Therapy
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Guided Self-Help
  • Couples Therapy

The service may also provide:

  • Accessible BSL psychoeducation resources
  • BSL digital CBT programmes
  • Group workshops covering subjects such as anxiety, trauma and emotional wellbeing
  • Support and accessible information for patients while they are waiting for treatment

Therapy may be provided online or face to face, depending on a person’s preference, location, need and service availability.
