There are many voluntary sector organisations in Sheffield providing treatment and support for people with mental heath difficulties. Some people prefer to seek help from an organisation separate from the NHS,and the voluntary sector provides many alternative options. Most, but not all, voluntary sector organisations work on a self-referral basis, so that individuals can approach the organisation themselves without the need for a referral from a GP or other worker. Many voluntary sector organisations are more specialised in what they provide, such as advocacy and supported accommodation, as well as help for carers, minority ethnic communities and women. Others are focused around a particularly activity, such as gardening or employment. Community-run organisations have a good understanding of local need and of why people may find using mainstream services difficult. Many organisations have developed innovative ways of working to help people, such as through peer support or providing wellbeing activities in the community. To search for organisations providing support around mental health and wellbeing, the Sheffield Mental Health Guide includes a Directory of Services. The Help Yourself database lists a wider range of community groups and voluntary sector services in Sheffield. |
