I need urgent help! What to do in a crisis

Sheffield Mental Health Advocacy Service

Sheffield Mental Health Advocacy Service provides independent advocacy and is part of Sheffield Citizens Advice (also known as Advice Sheffield).

The services they provide are:

  • General Mental Health Advocacy: This service is for adults (aged 16-65) who either need to access mental health services in Sheffield, or who are already using those services. Anyone can refer via the contact details provided.
  • Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) service for Sheffield and Barnsley. Qualifying patients in England have a legal right to access to help from an Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA). Anyone can refer via the contact details provided.
  • Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) service for Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley.

An IMCA must be involved if:

There is a decision to be made about a long term change of accommodation (more than 8 weeks in residential or nursing care, or more than 28 days in hospital) or a decision to be made about Serious Medical Treatment (as described in the Mental Capacity Act Code of Practice);

Or

An assessment is being carried out for the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) in a hospital or care home setting;

and

the person is deemed to lack capacity to make their own decision about the issue to be decided;

and

the person has neither family nor a friend whom it is appropriate to consult on their behalf.

An IMCA may also be involved for issues around Safeguarding and/or Care Reviews, even if the person does have family or friends involved.

IMCAs can also support unpaid Representatives appointed under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards on request of the Representative, and can support the person deprived of their liberty when this is deemed appropriate by the Supervisory Body (the local authority responsible for the person's care).

  • Relevant Persons Representative service for people subject to DoLS authorisations (appointed by the Supervisory Body).
